About Brio Artist: Karen Kurka Jensen

Highly regarded regionally and nationally, Karen Jensen has studied classical sumi-e techniques for over 10 years. Grounded by traditional methods and materials, her award-winning work is emerging as a fresh expression of the sumi-e art form..

Sumi-e is the ancient art of East Asian brush painting and it means ‘black ink painting’. Both sumi-e brush painting and calligraphy originated in China thousands of years ago.

Although sumi-e styles may vary over time from representational to abstract and from purely Asian to a combination of Western and Eastern art forms, all sumi-e artists use the same tools and similar techniques.

The tools are traditionally called the ‘Four Treasures’ which consist of the brush, ink, inkstone and rice paper.

Deceptively simple in appearance, sumi-e can be a refuge of inner peace and self-enlightenment.

Underlying the apparent simplicity and harmony of composition, there is first of all a philosophy, one that sees a unifying pattern of life in all natural forms.

The sumi-e artist celebrates the simplest things on earth as representing continuing life.

When the artist and nature become one, poetry will arise.
