DEAN DUNKEL works mainly in clay. He does not view himself as a "potter", but rather an artist who investigates shape and surface. Largely self-taught, he works out of his studio in the New Bohemia art district in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Dean creates wood-fired and pit-fired ceramics. He enjoys the excitement and hard work of firings that take up to five days using these ancient and sometimes unpredictable techniques.

Dean is drawn to art that evokes emotion, he strives for emotion in his own works by adding a little of himself in each piece. Always true to his own creative style, he is passionate about studying other artists’ techniques to learn not only what they do, but also why.
“I am been blessed by artist friends who help me learn and grow and by others who encourage me,” Dean says.
He has exhibited both two-dimensional work and three-dimensional art. His work has been shown and collected across the U.S. and in Canada.
